What Is Braziliam Jiu-Jitsu?
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is a martial art and combat sport that focuses on grappling and especially ground fighting with the goal of gaining a dominant position using joint-locks and chokeholds to force an opponent to submit or be knocked out depending on what submission method is used.

It promotes the principle that a smaller, weaker person using leverage and proper technique can successfully defend against a bigger, stronger assailant. BJJ can be trained for self defense, sport grappling tournaments (gi and no-gi) and mixed martial arts (MMA) competition. Sparring (commonly referred to as "rolling") and live drilling play a major role in training, and a premium is placed on performance, especially in competition.

Who is BJJ of Cincinnati?
BJJ of Cincinnati is a small club like atmosphere where we train gi and no-gi Brazilian jiu-jitsu. We are an affiliate of Shawn Hammonds, a Lloyd Irvin black belt, out of Nashville MMA. Shawn visits Cincinnati often for seminars and sometimes regular classes. We have members from all different age groups, genders, experience levels, and competitive interests. As much as humanly possible we attempt to foster an ego free environment to facilitate learning the art of jiu-jitsu. Our attitude is that if you injure your training partners then you're only hurting your own progress. We all have day jobs and families. However, a large percentage of our members also compete fairly often. We frequent the NAGA, Grapplers Quest, EGO, Hayastan, The Arnold Classic and other area tournaments.
